PUMA Voyage Nitro 4

First look review

Puma has ventured into the gravel game in a big way. The Voyage has been Pumas do-it-all model for a few years now, but none of the previous models have hit the mark. With the recent additions of the updated Magnify and Result, Puma has taken these learnings and crafted the Voyage, a more durable, versatile option for the trail and the road. They have firmed up the foam and reinforced the upper with structural overlays and an engineered knit upper. The multi-purpose model has become highly sought after, and this is certainly a fun addition to the line.

Fit-wise, I've found this model to run true to size in length and to have a reasonable width. I found the magnify to be slightly narrow in places, so it's nice to see they have widened the last slightly in the fore foot for a more trail fit. However, it feels narrow around the midfoot and a bit shallow in the toe area. The overlays on the medial side definitely give the shoe some structure and support, which is ideal for ever-changing terrain, but some may find it a little restricting.

The overall feel of this shoe is plush. There is more than enough foam for pounding the pavement, but not so much that it feels like stilts on the uneven off-road terrain. The full-length Pumagrip outsole is an excellent use of their world-renowned exceptional tread. Puma spent time developing its outsole material in collaboration with McLaren F1, and it certainly tops the field in grip, making it exciting to see them utilize it in their revamped trail models. With a more padded tongue, the lockdown in this shoe is very secure.

This is a door-to-trail shoe, shaped and tooled for a wide range of surfaces and uses. It will feel plush and comfortable on the pavement but have the grip of a trail shoe off-road. The ideal surfaces would be gravel and a groomed path, but I don't see why it couldn't tackle even more rugged terrain. These all-terrain models are a great addition to the running shoe game, and it's cool to see each brand taking some time to develop a model of their own.
