First Look
33 years of Kayano, quite a feat in the running industry to have a model with this kind of longevity. The Kayano, since its first model in 1993, has held the position of Asics key stability model. Over the years, we have seen the use of all sorts of technology to implement the feeling of stability, and now we have, in my opinion, the most comfortable and fluid support system to date. This model is still the most stable option in their lineup, but it is now providing the cushion we all love from our neutral daily training options.
The Fit
The fit seems to be the same as the 32; length and width haven't changed, so if you've enjoyed the previous sizing, then there should be no issues. True to the ASICS legacy, the engineered mesh upper feels incredibly plush with heavily padded heel collars and tongues that offer a secure, locked-in fit. The forefoot mesh has a bit more flex than in past models, meaning your pinky toes won't feel squished, though all that luxurious padding does make the rear of the shoe run a bit warm in hot weather.
The Feel
The heel bevel feels somewhat blocky, making the initial impact (If you land near the rear of the shoe) feel slightly clunky. Furthermore, despite the foam's energetic name, the firmer bottom layer dampens the springiness typically associated with foam. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as this shoe isn't meant ot feel super responsive and trick you into a faster effort.
Function
Ultimately, its function is to provide maximum underfoot protection and support for long-distance, recovery runs, or extended hours of standing and walking, without forcing the foot into an unnatural or rigid position.
Summary
Ultimately, the ASICS GEL-Kayano 33 successfully pushes the line away from the stiff, clunky stability shoes of yesteryear. If you want a highly durable, protective daily trainer for logging miles with some added support, it is a stellar premium option.
