FIRST LOOK

This could be one of Asics' most intriguing recent additions to their already outstanding lineup. The brand-new Megablast is a max-stacked, non-plated super trainer/racer and sits in a category of its own. It's difficult to overlook on the shelf in its eye-catching purple and red colorway, and after wearing it myself, I can guarantee it will quickly become your go-to shoe if you can get your feet on it.

FIT

The MEGABLAST has a race-inspired design with a lightweight, breathable mesh upper. Around the heel, the padding and heel collar combine to prevent slippage and provide superb lockdown. The tongue is gusseted (attached on the sides) to help prevent moving and the ribbed design used in several high-end Asics models will keep the laces tight. The length of the shoe usually fits true to size, however, the forefoot and midfoot fit relatively small and some compression may be experienced by runners with wider feet, especially on longer runs.

FEEL

The key draw that sets MEGABLAST apart from its competitors is the full-length midsole of FF TurboTM SQUARED (or FF TurboTM) foam. Despite its high stack of 45mm in the back and 37mm in the forefoot, MEGABLAST remains light and springy, weighing in at 230g for a mens size 9. The high energy return and resiliency of the foam offer a "bouncy" ride without feeling mushy. To ensure dependable traction, ASICSGRIP rubber is placed strategically across the outsole so as not to add excessive weight.

FUNCTION

The MEGABLAST is billed as a max-cushion daily training shoe that can do everything from easy and long steady miles to uptempo and even threshold sessions. It is extremely versatile and is a great option for those looking for something to train in that is also suitable for half marathon and marathon races. In contrast to its SONICBLAST sister, MEGABLAST lacks a plate of any kind, therefore you may want to look for a quicker option for shorter races.  Although the foam seems sturdy, the durability of the exposed sections on the outsole is a slight question mark and it may suffer on uneven surfaces.

The ASICS MEGABLAST is a compelling choice if you want a high-cushion shoe that also delivers liveliness. If your priorities are comfort and response over long distances with the ability to pick up the pace, then this shoe could well be your next love - it is fast becoming mine.
