FIRST LOOK REVIEW
Holy Hoka, just when we thought they couldn't make this shoe any foamier, they did. The new foam compound and the additional foam, however, give the shoe a whole different ride and feel. The most recent version of the Bondi is still a favourite among runners looking for the most cushioning. Here is my opinion after having the
opportunity to try it on foot.
FIT
Significant improvements have been made to the fit; the knit upper has been redesigned to be more comfortable and to fit your foot well. The material and redesigned collar give the shoe structure in key areas, making it feel snug and supportive. Im pleased to report that the shoe fits true to size, so if you've previously owned a pair of Hokas, choosing a size shouldn't be a problem. A foot can be cradled and guided along the route to toe off with the help of the elevated side walls, which are still present and provide some stability to the lateral foot without being obtrusive or creating hot spots.
FEEL
Supercritical EVA foam, which Hoka introduced, is unquestionably a positive move. It make running in the Bondi 9 more enjoyable and vibrant. The model's prior EVA foam provided cushioning without the pop and squish. This new compound feels more flexible and has a higher energy return. We have long sold this shoe as a walker/runner, but it seems to be shifting more towards its original use as a runner and a leg stress absorber. This model is 20g lighter than the previous one, thus the additional foam doesn't translate into more weight. The model maintains a 5mm drop in the hopes of maintaining the same consumer but I think the new foam and ride will invite some newcomers. They are using a “Mellow meta rocker’ which allows for a less aggressive roll feel but an easier landing in return.
FUNCTION
This model is designed for customers who want the most foam possible under foot, to ideally not feel the pounding of the pavement. With its H frame support system in the rear foot of the shoe its falls into the stable neutral category. With its new found bounce and energy return I would be more inclined to sell it as an everyday jogger as well as a walker.
The HOKA Bondi 9 is another strong entry in the maximalist running shoe category. It's plush, comfortable, and stable, with a noticeable improvement in fit and responsiveness compared to its predecessors. Whether you're logging long training runs, recovering from injury, or just looking for a daily trainer that will keep your feet happy, the Bondi 9 delivers on its promise of exceptional cushioning without sacrificing performance.
