First Look and Tom's thoughts

The Puma Fast-R Nitro Elite 3 clearly positions itself as a data-backed, performance-driven super shoe with elite credentials and bold ambitions in the carbon-racing segment. As the newest addition to the carbon racing market for 2025, the Puma Fast-R 3 is a dramatic improvement on previous editions, having had a head-to-toe makeover in all departments. Science and AI technology has played a huge part in the development of this model, and it’s been super interesting to see this addition used to create a product we can now wear on foot. The study, led by industry specialist Wouter Hoogkamer, concluded that Fast-R Nitro Elite 3 provides a 3.15% improved running economy*, which for a 3-hour marathon runner translates to an unprecedented potential marathon time saving of more than 4 minutes and 30 seconds. This is a very impressive claim, and I think it’s important to note that this was a specific test done for a specific time in the marathon, so there are still unknowns on how it will perform below or above that 3-hour mark.

FIT

The overall fit of this model is fantastic. The shape of the toe box is great and offers room and support in the appropriate areas, something that can be quite difficult to do in a racing model. The upper material is incredibly lightweight and breathable but still manages to provide a secure lockdown fit. This is partly due to the simple but effective heel counter. The shoe is a very comfortable model and one that is comfy from the very first try-on. The model fits true to size, so ordering should be a simple process.

Feel

The feel of the Fast-R 3 is one of a kind. This dramatic shape and design provides a very unique and specific underfoot feel. The shoe is aggressive - very aggressive - which lends itself to a runner who can land in the front three-quarters and is strong enough to stay there for the duration of their desired race. This is due to the shape and rigidity of the carbon plate and how the shoe is broken into two compartments. AI was asked to take out everything unnecessary to remove weight and improve efficiency. The bi-product of this two-part midsole design is sacrificing some stability. The heel piece does have some extra width to account for this, but the positioning of it seems off. It’s very far forward, which again encourages you to strike further forward on the shoe. So, if you are more of a heel striker, this may not be the best option for you.

Function

This shoe is quite particular, and I believe it's one of the few racing shoes you should really just wear on race day and for quicker efforts. The aggressive nature of the model may be a bit hard for the body to use on a super regular basis.

Overall, this is a very exciting update to the Puma racing range and racing market that I think will be a very welcomed addition. It’s fast, light, and exciting to run in. It ticks a number of boxes, and I’m looking forward to putting a few kilometers through them.
