HOKA CIELO X 1 2.0
Long synonymous with rocker technology, Hoka has outdone itself with the latest iteration of the Cielo model. They have taken things to the extreme in many ways with this shoe, and it surpassed first expectations. The shoe has had a makeover from top to bottom, and they have reimagined how their racing shoe operates. Shaving around 30 grams off the previous model, this has turned it into a serious contender in the racing shoe market.
One of the standout features of the Cielo X 1 2.0 is its updated midsole design. It boasts a full PEBA midsole with a carbon plate, promising a responsive and energetic ride. The carbon plate is strategically placed to propel you forward during those long 42.2km runs, and the shoe is said to be more stable than the previous model; however, I would say this rings true if you have a perfect foot placement and running gait. They have moved the rocker further back in the shoe. This change in the rocker placement is now more focused on the heel, trying to improve gait cycle flow and helping runners feel more connected to the ground.
While HOKA has maintained the impressive cushioning it's known for, the plate dynamic cutouts are a notable change to the model. They have taken cutouts and strategically placed rises to add support and minimize weight.
Weighing in at 228g, the Cielo X 1 2.0 isn't the lightest marathon shoe on the market, but it's certainly not heavy. The clever rocker design could help offset the weight, making it feel lighter and more responsive than the scale suggests. Plus, this added weight could translate to more durability over long distances—something many marathoners will appreciate
The shape of this model has improved significantly. The new shape fits snugly and hugs the foot extremely well. The previous model felt baggy and was loose in vital areas of the shoe. It also had too much volume in the upper, which made it fit a little long on the size charts, but they have rendered this, and I believe the new model fits true to size.
Overall, the HOKA Cielo X 1 2.0 looks to be a serious upgrade for those seeking a race-ready shoe that combines speed and comfort. This shoe's improved fit, advanced cushioning technology, and strategic geometry make it an exciting option to consider. I would consider trying the model on before purchasing as once again this is a unique feel and shoe and requires a proper fit to make sure it’ll work for you.
