Hoka Mach X2

Hoka Mach X2

on

The Mach X2 is a perfect fit at a time when super trainers are the newest, dazzling toy. It is evident by looking at the sneaker itself that it has undergone a thorough overhaul. The upper is composed of woven mesh rather than creel jacquard, and the tongue is thin. With a rocker form and geometry reminiscent of the Cielo X1, a lengthier Pebax plate is sandwiched between an EVA layer and a PEBA-topped midsole. This shoe, which measures 38 mm in the heel and 33 mm in the forefoot, looks suitable for race day even if Hoka kept the 5 mm drop.

The forefoot of this shoe is big but not overly so, which is a fantastic design that lets your foot splay and distributes your pressure when you're running. This complements the Peba super foam slab that has been bulked out. Well done Hoka. This compound is among the best on the market for its exceptional responsiveness and cushioning.

The super trainer model is a shoe that is designed to be used for jogging and racing. Offering an all-in-one option for people who don’t want to go as extreme as a carbon-plated racer but still receive a fun fast ride when they feel like doing so. The Pebax plate offers some snappy propulsion and some stability for a shoe that’s not labelled as a “stability’ option. The dual-density outsole works to provide a durable and firmer layer closer to the ground, this also works with the Pebax plate to provide some rear foot stability by cupping both the medial and lateral side of the heel.

The heel counter is one issue with the shoe, though, and it could need to be fixed for upcoming editions. Although it wasn't a problem for me, I can understand how it would be for other people. This is not the shoe for you if you prefer a cushioned heel-hugging counter. The heel is not as noticeable as it is on other racing models, but I believe this problem would not have arisen if Hoka had opted to utilise a counter like the Rocket X 2.

Overall, this shoe has made some massive improvements ones that will make it a lot more accommodating for a wider audience. The fit, feel and function is spot on in all areas and Hoka has created a shoe that does it all.
