The New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Elite V4 is the latest iteration in the brand’s flagship performance shoe lineup, designed for athletes seeking speed, responsiveness, and comfort in competitive running. This version builds on the FuelCell platform with some notable improvements in both design and performance, making it a compelling choice for serious runners and racers.
The FuelCell SuperComp Elite V4 showcases a modern look with a breathable upper and a refined midsole. The knit mesh upper provides a snug, sock-like fit that adapts well to different foot shapes, enhancing comfort and support. The minimalistic design, with its strategically placed overlays, is lightweight but still provides support where needed. The tongue is soft and seamless, further adding to the comfort and reducing any potential hotspots during longer runs. The only knock on the upper is it quite shallow in the toe box which could cause some issues.
New Balance has made a notable upgrade to the FuelCellmidsole technology in this version, focusing on delivering a softer and more responsive ride. The FuelCell foam is now a peba-based foam to provide a balance of plush cushioning and high rebound, delivering a lively and propulsive experience. The midsole also houses Energy Arc, a carbon-fibre-infusedplate that aids in propulsion and increases speed during toe-off. This combination of cushioning and responsiveness makes the V4 particularly effective for high-speed running and race-day conditions.
I felt the foam to be very comfortable but possibly lacked the response wanted at top-end speeds. The more compliant density means you spend a little longer on the ground but aims to offer a softer and smoother transition so it ultimately comes down to what feel you enjoy when racing. The one issue I had with the underfoot feel was due to the shape and cutouts on the lateral side of the shoe it felt like there was a sizeable chunk of shoe under the little toe. It pushed me across to my big toe rather aggressively and felt a little hard to control at times.
The outsole offers ample tread for durability and traction. I found it to be one of the better outsoles for a racing shoe. There is a fair bit of tread so it’s designed to last the distance. The rubber is sticky and has great cutouts in the right spots for optimal traction. I am yet to run in it in the rain but feel like it’ll be a great option for those conditions.
The fit of the SuperComp Elite V4 is snug but comfortable, with a roomy toe box that accommodates toe splay, an important feature for longer distances. The midfoot feels secure, thanks to the engineered knit upper and supportive heel cup, making the shoe stable even during high-intensity efforts.
The New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Elite V4 is a high-performance, race-oriented shoe that brings an impressive blend of cushioning, responsiveness, and speed. If you're looking for a shoe to help you hit those race-day PBs, the SuperComp Elite V4 is a great option to consider.
